How to optimize a WordPress Elementor Website?

Optimizing a WordPress site built with Elementor requires a specific approach because page builders can sometimes generate extra Document Object Model (DOM) elements and assets.

—

1. Switch to Flexbox Containers: Crucial structural fix.

If you are still using legacy sections and columns, your site is generating excess nested HTML wrappers. Migrate your layouts to Flexbox Containers. They drastically reduce DOM size and improve mobile responsiveness without extra code.

Verification: Inspect your live page source or run a tool like Lighthouse; your total DOM element count should ideally drop below 1,400 nodes.

2. Tune Elementor Built-in Performance Settings: Dashboard tweaks.

Go to Elementor > Settings > Features (or Experiments) in your WordPress dashboard. Turn on performance enhancements:

3. Pair with a Lightweight Theme: The Hello Theme.

Avoid multi-purpose themes loaded with features you don’t use. Switch to the native Hello Theme by Elementor or another ultra-lightweight framework like Astra or GeneratePress.

Verification: Check your homepage size; a lightweight setup should typically keep total page weight under 1.5MB on initial load.

4. Optimize Media & Enable Lazy Loading: Images and Videos.

Elementor sites are visual, meaning large images heavily impact your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).

5. Deploy Caching and Optimization Plugins: WP Rocket or LiteSpeed Cache.

Install a high-end caching plugin to handle page caching, GZIP compression, and database cleanups. If your host uses LiteSpeed servers, use the LiteSpeed Cache plugin for optimal server-level integration.

Verification: Check your Time to First Byte (TTFB) using GTmetrix; it should consistently score under 800 milliseconds.
